The first study visit was organized to
Copenhagen, Denmark, between 12-18 May 2024, within the scope of the Istanbul SUMP
Stage II Implementation Plan Project implemented under the USOP, cofinanced by the
EU and the Republic of Türkiye.
The study visit was started with the development
of Copenhagen City and the transfer of the public transportation-oriented urban
development process with the vision of the 'Finger Plan' as a global good
example. The first day, which continued with the presentation in which
Copenhagen Municipality Urban Planning Director explained the strategic
planning approach and practices in the city, ended with a field visit on
sustainable mobility networks created by public spaces.
Focusing on the theme of Active Mobility, on the
second day, a presentation was made from the Danish Cycling Federation about
the role of NGOs in planning bicycle routes and developing the bicycle culture.
Following the presentations under the headings of innovative policies and green
mobility in active mobility, smart transportation systems applications and
traffic management by Copenhagen Municipality officials were given.
On the third day, which continued with the theme
of public transport, information about public transport strategies and
practices in Copenhagen city center and metropolitan region was made. Then, a
bicycle tour was held where the urban open spaces designed to increase urban
resilience against floods and the cycling infrastructure were experienced.
On the fourth day, focusing on the theme of urban
resilience, the policies developed by Copenhagen City officials regarding
climate resilience and good practices developed through participatory methods
were conveyed. Following the presentation on best practices carried out with
the theme of healthy streets, a field trip was organized to the city of Malmo,
which is within the functional urban area of the City of Copenhagen.
Approximately 100 thousand trips are made daily between Copenhagen and Malmo,
20 thousand of which are home-work trips. During the field trip, sustainable
transportation practices in the city of Malmo were evaluated and discussions
were held on the differences in practices between Copenhagen and Malmo.
On the last day of the study visit, low emission
zone policies, which were tried to be implemented in the City of Copenhagen but
were withdrawn as a result of reactions because public participation and
communication studies were not progressed appropriately, and the lessons
learned from the process were discussed. Then, a workshop on the design of the
bicycle path on Bagdat Street was organized with the participants and Danish
experts, and the active participation of the study visit participants in the
workshop was ensured. The study visit program was concluded with the workshop.
