Halkalı-Kapıkule Railway Project Received Award in Finance and Funding Category

“Inaugural Eurasia Strategic Infrastructure Leadership Forum” has been held in Malaga, Spain at the Grand Miramar Hotel on December 11-13, 2019. The forum organized by CG/LA Infrastructure which is an institution aiming to serve creation of  long-term value in the World’s Infrastructure Markets, was co-hosted by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development – EBRD and the Government of the Netherlands, Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.

The Forum convened over 250 infrastructure experts and decision makers from across Eurasia and the Southern & Eastern Mediterranean (SEMED) regions. Participants discussed strategic infrastructure projects under the overall theme “Strategic Infrastructure Investment for Robust Economic Growth”, as well as the sub themes;

1) Strategic Value in Projects,

2) Innovative Technology,

3) Improved Sustainability.

Halkalı Kapıkule Railway Line Project has taken its place in “Strategic 100 Global Infrastructure List– 12th edition” prepared by the organizer of this forum: CG/LA Infrastructure. Additionally, in the forum, a presentation is done on Halkalı Kapıkule Railway Line Project by the Contract Manager of the project Tunç DEMİREL.

As a result of the voting held during the Forum, the “Inspiration Project of the Year Award” was awarded in the following 5 categories:

1) Strategic

2) Engineering

3) Finance and Funding

4) Green Infrastructure / Sustainability

5) Job Creation

Halkalı Kapıkule Railway Line Project, which has taken part in the final 4 top tier projects in both “Strategic” and “Finance and Funding” fields, considered worthy of “Inspiration Project of the Year Award” for 2019 under “Finance and Funding” category. On behalf of our Ministry, Head of EU Investments Department Mr. Nedim Yeşil has received this precious award from Mr. Norman Anderson, Chairman and CEO of CG/LA Infrastructure.

Currently, Çerkezköy-Kapıkule Section of Halkalı Kapıkule Railway Line Project is under construction. The project is the largest infrastructure investment under Instrument for Pre-Accession (IPA) of EU. The EU funds allocated to the project is app. 8.5 % of the total funds allocated for Turkey and app. 79 % of the funds allocated to the transport sector during IPA II (2014-2020) period.

When completed, double track 200km/hr high-speed rail line for passenger and freight transport on 231 km route between Halkalı Kapıkule will become operational. With this project the missing link between EU, Turkey and Asia will be completed and the TEN-T corridor of EU will be extended.
