Under the Sustainable Urban Mobility
Plan (SUMP) Türkiye Project which is implemented under the Sectoral Operational
Programme for Transport (USOP) as part of the Türkiye-EU financial cooperation
managed by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, 23rd
online training session was held on 10 October 2024bringing together
municipalities. A total of 310 participants attended. The online training
session titled "Sustainable Urban Logistics" was moderated by
Leventcan Er, representative of Rupprecht Consultancy.
Pedro Gomes presentation
on urban freight transport and logistics, Gomes addressed urban vehicle access
regulations and ways to improve traffic flow in cities. He also discussed the
negative impacts of the inefficient use of urban freight vehicles on public
health, as well as the concepts of e-commerce and "Logistics as a
Service".
The second
presentation in the first session was delivered by Volkan Recai Çetin (PhD),
Project Team Leader, who outlined the five key areas of urban mobility and
related cross-cutting fields within the context of “Green Policy Book”.
The third
panellist of the first session, Katy Huaylla, an Urban Development Specialist,
stressed the importance of enhancing flexibility and resilience for dynamic
urban logistics, ensuring inclusive stakeholder participation, and promoting
fair competition in logistics. Huaylla emphasised the need for collaboration
between environmental and mobility units in addressing urban logistics.
In the afternoon session, the focus shifted to
solutions and new approaches in urban logistics. The first presentation,
delivered by Transport Modelling Specialist Ioanna Kourounioti, provided
insights into new approaches and methods for urban freight transport and city
logistics, discussing the differences between the two terms.
Following her presentation, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Tanyaş,
Head of the Department of International Trade and Logistics at Maltepe
University and Vice President of the Logistics Association, gave a presentation
on “urban freight generation and attraction centres”, “the concept and
principles of urban logistics”, and “logistics centres”. Prof. Dr. Tanyaş began
by discussing how urbanisation, urban transformation, and lifestyle changes
impact the need for sustainable, smart urban logistics.
The webinar continued with a presentation by Serkan
Uçar, Head of the Railway Construction Department at the Directorate General of
Infrastructure Investments at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
Uçar shared details about the infrastructure and connection roads of the
Kemalpaşa Logistics Centre in Izmir, noting its links to various ports and
railway lines.
The final presentation of the webinar was delivered by
Hassan Hussin, a Transport Specialist, who spoke on Sustainable Urban
Logistics. Hussin discussed the SMMR II (Sustainable Urban Mobility for the
Mediterranean Region II) Project and urban freight transport processes,
providing detailed suggestions to enhance the efficiency of urban freight
transport.
In closing, the importance of cooperation between
local authorities and stakeholders in implementing sustainable urban logistics
solutions was highlighted. It was also noted that future steps would focus on
strengthening this collaboration and improving urban logistics processes, thus
bringing the webinar to an end.
