‘’The Third Workshop on Disaster Resilient
Transportation System” within the scope of the Istanbul Sustainable Urban
Mobility Plan (SUMP) Phase II Implementation Project, jointly
co-financed with the EU within the framework of the Sectoral Operational
Programme for Transport (USOP) managed by the Ministry of Transport and
Infrastructure,
was held on May 23, 2025 in Istanbul. The focus of the workshop was on
increasing the resilience of Istanbul's urban transportation system against
natural disasters, particularly earthquakes and floods.
In the first part of the event, the results of
the Risk and Vulnerability Analysis on possible disaster scenarios that may
affect Istanbul were shared. This was followed by a workshop where the analyses
were discussed in detail. Stakeholders exchanged views on identifying areas
that need strengthening and developing solutions.
In the second half of the workshop, two
thematic sessions were organized. In the first session, measures for Istanbul's
earthquake resilience were discussed. In the second session, steps that can be
taken in the transportation system against flood risks caused by climate change
were discussed. Participants contributed on how to make the system more
resilient according to different scenarios.
This workshop is a continuation of the disaster
preparedness themed event series launched in January and represents an
important step towards a sustainable and disaster-resilient transportation
system in Istanbul.
