Various Activities Were Carried Out During the European Mobility Week Within the Scope of the Kocaeli Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan Project (SUMP Kocaeli)
The European
Mobility Week, which is held annually from September 16th to 22nd,
was celebrated this year with high participation and enthusiasm. The theme for
this year, set as "Discover Your City!", was accompanied by the
slogan "Save Energy!", emphasizing the importance of conserving
energy, a current and crucial issue that concerns the entire world. As part of
the Kocaeli Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan Project (Kocaeli SUMP), whose
primary goal is to reduce environmental and social issues caused by
transportation in Kocaeli, various activities were organized.
The opening of
the week took place on September 16th with the participation of more
than 150 cyclists at Karamürsel Kordon. The 2.3 km-tour started in the morning
from Sekapark Kite Hill, continued with a bike ride to 1 March Pier and then
reached Ulaşlı Pier by ferry. Following that, a 9 km-tour was held at
Karamürsel Kordon, and it was concluded by returning to 1 March Pier. Mr. Ali
Bilgi, the Head of Transportation Department of Kocaeli Metropolitan
Municipality, participated on the same day in live broadcasts organised under SUMP
Türkiye Project whose end beneficiary is the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye
.
On September 22nd,
celebrated worldwide as "Car Free Day," the week was concluded with a
procession that began in front of “Kocaeli Merkez Bankası” and ended in İzmit
Kent Square in the evening. The procession, consisting of pedestrians and
cyclists accompanied by a band, was also joined by Mr. Gökmen Mengüç, Deputy
Secretary-General of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, and Mr. Ali Bilgi, Head
of the Transportation Department.
