The Future of Transportation: Istanbul 2040 Mobility Scenarios Workshop Held in Istanbul

The Istanbul SUMP Phase II Implementation Plan Project, Co-financed with the EU under the Transport Sectoral Operational Programme (USOP) managed by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, held the Istanbul 2040 Mobility Scenarios Workshop on 14 January 2025 to shape the vision for Istanbul’s transportation system in 2040. The workshop brought together a wide range of stakeholders.

The Future Vision Panel, moderated by journalist Ayça Ceylan, featured transportation expert Prof. Dr. Haluk Gerçek and tech entrepreneur Alphan Manas. The panel addressed key topics such as innovation, urban planning, and the future of transportation.

The workshop also included detailed evaluations of alternative scenario studies prepared for Istanbul's 2040 mobility plan. Working groups analyzed innovative and sustainability-focused alternative scenarios based on specific criteria.

Each group examined the scenarios in terms of feasibility, long-term impacts, and sustainability. They focused on topics such as transportation infrastructure, social accessibility, eco-friendly technologies, and economic transformation. The scenario analyses involved discussions of each approach's strengths and weaknesses. By the end of the sessions, the aim was to develop a more comprehensive and inclusive mobility plan for Istanbul by synthesizing the strengths of all the scenarios.
