Within the scope of the Istanbul SUMP Phase II Implementation
Plan Project, which is co-financed by the EU under the Transport
Sectoral Operational Programme (USOP) managed by the Ministry
of Transport and Infrastructure, a Maritime Transport Workshop was organized on
7 January 2025. The workshop aimed to increase the share of maritime transport
in İstanbul's public transit system and develop a more accessible and
integrated maritime transport network.
The workshop commenced with an opening speech by
Melda Horoz, the Director of Transportation Planning for the Istanbul
Metropolitan Municipality. This was succeeded by a thorough presentation
delivered by Prof. Stratos Papadimitriou regarding the Maritime Transport Pilot
Project under SUMP Phase II. The presentation addressed the project’s
objectives, methods of implementation, and anticipated outcomes outcomes.
During the sessions, topics such as improving
pier accessibility, ensuring integration with other transport modes, and
strategic planning for the future of maritime transport were discussed. With
the participation of district municipalities, NGOs, professional chambers, and
citizens, the current and potential impacts of the projects were assessed.
Participants shared valuable ideas on how to make Istanbul's transport system
more environmentally friendly and sustainable.
This workshop marked a significant step toward
Istanbul’s sustainable mobility vision.
