The Low Emission Zones Public Information Meeting within the framework of
the Istanbul SKUp Phase II Implementation Plan Project which is financed under the Sectoral
Operational Programme for Transport (USOP) managed by the Ministry of Transport
and Infrastructure was held on 23
October 2024, in Istanbul. This meeting aimed to
introduce participants to the primary objectives of the Low Emission Zone (LEZ)
initiative, including reducing air pollution, lowering carbon emissions, and
promoting active mobility within the city.
During the
event, an overview of Low Emission Zones was provided, emphasizing their goal
to enhance air quality and reduce traffic congestion, particularly in central
areas, ultimately benefiting both public health and the environment. It was
also highlighted how the increased use of eco-friendly transportation modes
(such as walking, cycling, and public transit) would make significant
contributions to Istanbul’s sustainable mobility vision.
In the afternoon
workshop sessions, the advantages of Low Emission Zones were discussed, and
participants shared their recommendations for the implementation. Attendees had
the opportunity to voice their ideas on how the LEZ initiative could further
benefit Istanbul. This meeting marked the first step towards determining the
LEZ boundaries and implementation strategies using participatory methods.
The meeting was
attended by stakeholders from Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, local
government representatives, academics, NGOs, and environmental organizations.
Participants gained awareness of the current emission challenges facing the
city, learned about sustainable mobility solutions, and provided valuable
feedback.
