As part of the
European Mobility Week, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality organized a healthy
street workshop called Street in My Dreams workshop of Istanbul Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan
(SUMP) Phase II- Implementation Plan Project which is financed under the Sectoral Operational
Programme (USOP) for Transport managed by the Ministry of Transport and
Infrastructure, was held on 17 September
2024 in Bakırköy, Istanbul. The workshop was planned to organize Pelinli Street in order to develop
solutions to make the streets more people-oriented and livable.
At the opening of the
workshop, IBB Transportation Planning Branch Manager Melda Horoz emphasized the
importance of the European Mobility Week and summarized the purpose of the
workshop with the statements “Our priority is people, our priority is pedestrians”.
Afterwards, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sertaç Erten gave a briefing on the concept of
healthy streets and stated that streets are common public spaces, and a more
people-oriented transportation planning is aimed. “By building comfortable,
safe and accessible streets, we will develop solutions that leave no one
behind,” he said.
During the workshop,
the problems on the streets were observed with a walk on Pelinli Street.
Participants examined pavement availability, parking problems and the
relationship between public spaces on the street and pedestrians, and proposed
solutions to make streets more accessible and safer. In addition, examples of
good practices from around the world were examined and three alternative
solutions for Pelinli Street were discussed in the light of these examples.
At the end of the
workshop, the participants shared their ideas on how to make the streets more
accessible in accordance with the principles of healthy streets.
