Sakarya Hosted Net Zero Emission Roadmap Workshop

Sakarya hosted the focus group workshop for the "Türkiye’s Net Zero Emission Roadmap for Transport" project, which is one of the USOP’s projects, organized in line with Türkiye’s 2053 Net Zero Emission targets on 24 February 2025. The workshop brought together representatives from public institutions, private sector stakeholders, academics, and industry experts to discuss strategies for achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector.

In the opening session, Tijen İğci (PhD), Head of Department for EU Investments at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, emphasized the importance of EU-funded investments in the transport sector, highlighting their alignment with sustainable transport goals.  İğci noted that significant funding had been allocated, particularly to railway projects, and that technical support initiatives further strengthened these efforts.

Musa Yazıcı, Head of Mobility Management and Accessible Transport at the Ministry, underlined the significance of a comprehensive roadmap for achieving Türkiye’s 2053 Net Zero Emission target. He emphasized the importance of transport sector transformation, including a shift from road to rail transport, sustainable urban mobility plans, and electric vehicle infrastructure as key environmental solutions.

Göktuğ Kara, Transport Sector Manager at the EU Delegation to Türkiye, stressed the strategic role of rail transport and highlighted Turkey’s advantages in the renewable energy sector.

Throughout the workshop, dedicated sessions focused on road, rail, and urban transport, identifying short-, medium-, and long-term action plans for each transport mode. Discussions explored technical and financial mechanisms to accelerate Türkiye’s transition to a low-carbon transport system. Following expert presentations and group discussions, concrete recommendations for the sustainable transformation of the transport sector were consolidated into a final report.
