A Study Visit to Spain Was Conducted within the scope of Denizli ITS Project

Within the scope of the “Public Transportation Gets Smarter in Denizli” Project, implemented under the Sectoral Operational Programme for Transport (USOP) managed by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure as part of Turkey–EU financial cooperation, a technical study visit was conducted in Spain between 27 April and 4 May 2025, primarily based in Barcelona and covering four cities in total.

The delegation included representatives from Denizli Metropolitan Municipality and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, as well as experts and officials from the project’s implementing partner, Sistem Global Consultancy. Throughout the program—organized in the cities of Barcelona, Granada, Valencia, and Madrid—best practices across Europe were observed on-site, particularly focusing on the digitalization of transport systems, traffic control centers, integrated public transport infrastructure, and pedestrian- and bicycle-oriented planning strategies.

Highlighted technical activities during the visit included:

  • Technical sessions and R&D presentations at Aimsun Headquarters,
  • Visit to the Barcelona Municipal Traffic Control Center,
  • Technical inspection of the Granada Traffic Control Center,
  • Site visit to the Valencia Traffic Control Center and metro system,
  • Superblocks field study in Barcelona,
  • Madrid city tour and observations on transport integration.

Participants gained in-depth knowledge on Barcelona’s Superblocks model, Valencia’s real-time data-driven traffic management and integrated transport systems, and Granada’s scalable solutions tailored to medium-sized cities. Additionally, detailed technical briefings were held on Aimsun’s scenario planning tools and R&D projects supported by EIT Urban Mobility.
